How to Promote Your Ad Shop - Passionfruit's guide to blogging ...

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 09:54 AM PST

Sunday night we held a little #pfchat on Twitter to discuss promotion and good tactics to promoting your ad business. It's a bit funny to advertise your ads, right? Here's the highlights along with some additional insight that we've learned at PF.

Q1: How do you let followers know you have ads for sale?

Consensus in the room was definitely to post to your blog and social accounts regularly. Some were hesitant to post at all, or to take up a whole blog post with a sponsor call. Several mentioned they include a sponsor call at the end of posts throughout the month, which is an excellent place to remind your readers.

Takeaways:

  • The number one way to promote your shop is to include an "advertise here" text or banner that links to your ad shop in the place you show your ads. Do this today! See examples: Heart IFB, Of Trees and Hues, and Julie Ann Art.
  • Don't be afraid to post reminders, just do it in your own voice and in a way that makes you comfortable.
  • Use the end of your posts to remind readers about your sponsor openings.
  • Seek out other ways to promote yourself, such as newsletters, Facebook groups, and even Twitter chats :)

Q2: We all follow people who remind us about their ads. What's too much? When does it get annoying?

This question grew out of the previous, where it was clear there's a line to be weary of crossing when it comes to promoting yourself. I shared that I've actually blocked a few on Twitter who remind their followers 2-3 times a day about their ads, and tagged me every time.

Nearly everyone was unanimous that they don't mind a weekly reminder, and they understand we're all in the same business here and a fair amount of promotion is necessary. But more often is a turn off, and cold emails to other bloggers pressuring them to sponsor is a definite no-no.

Takeaways:

  • Stay sincere and authentic! Don't be a spammer.
  • Put yourself in the shoes of your followers and make sure you'd be ok with the frequency and tone of your messaging.

Q3: Lots talking about emailing people to sponsor.. sometimes annoying and sometimes fruitful. What's the right way to do it?

Cold emailing other bloggers and pressuring to sponsor was a definite no-no among the group. But many cited the success at emailing companies with sincere proposals to work together and seeing a sponsorship relationship bloom by itself.

Takeaways:

  • Email companies you love and want to work with. Don't ask for money up front. Focus on how much you love their brand and want to work with them.
  • Offer discounts or a free month of ads to prove that you're a good fit .
  • It's probably best to never cold-email other bloggers asking them to buy ads. These are not the droids you are looking for.

Q4: Which type of promotion (blog, twitter, emailing, etc) has brought you the most results? What was your approach?

The overall theme among bloggers I talk to was reflected here too: be authentic. Say thank you. Be nice and real. People respond to authenticity.

Takeaways:

  • There's really no silver bullet for promotion. Use your networks and spread the word and good things will happen.

Bonus question, from @buzzbeauty: Q5: How do you get more visitors to your blog?

This topic deserves it's own set of posts, but Emerald asked during the chat and we had a bit of time at the end.

Then I passed along our top 3 tips I share on this question every time. This is definitely coming as a follow-up post:

Conclusion

The theme of the chat was definitely to be authentic. Speak in your own voice. Don't be shy about promoting yourself.

Thank you to everyone who joined us! Our next chat is January 5th, hope to see you there.

Is your business staying relevant in the digital world? The number of businesses that use social networking, subscriber lists, and blogs to compete for the attention of your ideal customers is simply staggering. You need to find ways to promote your online entrepreneur blog so that it breaks through the noise being made by your competitors. Increasing your blog's visibility online is the best way to get your blog noticed. Here are 10 ways to promote your business blog for maximum exposure:

1) Post Frequently

Many blogging experts advise business blog owners to post often in the beginning. Then, as your blog becomes more established, you can slow it down a bit so you won't overwhelm your subscribers. Admittedly, there's no magic number when it comes to the amount of posts you should publish each week. However, when your blog is new, three to five posts per week is a good place to start.

2) Use SEO Keywords in Your Posts

This can be a very tricky task for beginner bloggers. You must use keyword tools to research the keywords your target audience is using in their searches and then write content related to those keywords. The trick is to include the keywords without hindering the quality of your content. That means quality first and SEO second. Also, keep in mind that Google Penguin updates frown upon content written with an abundance of keywords, which makes the content sound robotic.

3) Use a Professional Profile Pic

Online searchers tend to click on results with profile pics in them. Having your profile pic show up in search results makes your blog appear more authentic to searchers. This increases the chances that they will click through to your post.

4) Add Buttons for Social Sharing

Install buttons on your blog's main page and individual posts so that visitors can easily share your content. You should include a Facebook like button, Twitter retweet button, and share buttons for Google+, StumbleUpon, and LinkedIn. These buttons allow users to help your content go viral on social media networks with just one click.

5) Promote on Your Facebook Business Page

There are various applications that automatically post links to your published blog posts on your Facebook page for you. However, this can be done more efficiently if you do it yourself. Once the post is published, simply copy the URL to the actual post and paste it on your Facebook page. Facebook will automatically grab the main image as well as your meta data to add to the post. All you have to do is add a few extra words to the post for a more persuasive message. This will increase the amount of click-throughs and "likes" you receive.

6) Promote on Your Personal Facebook Page

In many cases, you will have personal Facebook friends that haven't "liked" your Facebook business page. You can maximize your Facebook marketing efforts by promoting to those friends as well. Follow the same process for promoting new posts on your Facebook business page to promote those same posts on your personal page. This will get your posts even more "likes," which search engines will appreciate.

7) Tweet It

You will also find many apps that will automatically tweet announcements about your new blog posts for you. Once again, this method is much more efficient if you tweet your announcements manually. Simply paste the link to the actual post and include an interesting message to make Twitter users eager to read the post. Be sure to tweet about your post multiple times throughout the day, and use a unique message for each post.

8) Build a Subscriber List

If your subscribers find your blog posts interesting, they will eagerly return regularly to see what's new. Many of these loyal visitors will also be excited to read valuable information that can't be found on your site. These are the visitors who will benefit most from your email newsletters. Create email versions of your blog feed and promote them in your website's "Feature" box. Some users will simply subscribe to the RSS feed. Others will prefer to receive regular emails about new content, products, and services. Be sure to give your website and blog visitors this option.

9) Online Business Cards

Online business cards are great for sharing your company's contact information on Twitter, Facebook, and in your email newsletters. You can even add to them local search services so that they show up in Google and other search engines. This will help your SEO rankings in search results. It will also ensure that your business is listed professionally in local search results.

10) Commenting & Guest Blogging

Commenting on related blog posts is a very effective way to promote your own blog. When you come across a post that's related to your industry or niche that allows comments with links, utilize it. Add a relevant comment that stirs up a good conversation or contribute to an ongoing conversation about the post. Then, include a link to your own blog or a related blog post. This is a great way to get backlinks to your blog and content.

Another effective method for creating backlinks for your site is guest blogging. Guest blogging allows you to showcase your blogging marketing expertise on other popular blogs related to your industry. As a guest poster, you have the ability to create a user profile on the guest blog. Be sure that your profile includes the name of your company as well as a link to your website or blog.

EdTechSandyK: Resolve to Promote Truth - EdTechSandyK - Blogger

Posted: 31 Dec 2013 10:47 AM PST

OK educators. It's time to put the skills you have to work with ALL of the people in your lives, not just the ones you call your students. This may also include yourselves.

It's time to promote self-restraint. And critical thinking. And research skills.

It's time to be OK with gently correcting even the adults in your life.

Why this call to action? Because I firmly believe that until we can promote the idea that ALL of us, regardless of age, are responsible for conducting ourselves wisely online, convincing our young people to be responsible digital citizens will be an uphill, frustrating, and in the long run a losing battle.

An area where I believe we can easily make an impact is in the area of promoting the truth. Stated another way, let's resolve to

  • Not pass along information without doing some quick fact checking.
    • If you don't have time to fact check, just don't pass the info along.
  • Let people know when they are sharing incorrect information and ask them to delete and post a correction.
  • In the process, teach others how to do their own quick fact checking.

An Example of How to Promote Truth

Following through on a resolution to promote truth is not all that difficult. Here is a scenario which played out for me earlier this fall:

  • A friend posted an address on Facebook where people could send cards to wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C.
  • Thinking it was a good idea, but wanting to be sure it would truly work, I went to my favorite rumor checking website, snopes.com, and searched for Walter Reed cards for soldiers and quickly found that the address shared by my friend would not work.
  • I then posted a comment on my friend's Facebook post, sharing that the information was inaccurate and that Snopes is a good place to check on these types of things before sharing. Then, I gently suggested she might want to take it down and let the person who shared it with her know as well. (She did take it down!)

That's how easy it was. Instead of clicking Share without thought, I took about five extra minutes to confirm that what was being said was true. Hopefully, anyone else who saw this play out will hesitate the next time they are about to share information and take a moment to check.

Develop Your Suspicion Muscle

One thing we all need to do is become more suspicious of the things we read online, especially the ones that are "feel good" (like sending Christmas cards to soldiers) or "cries for help" (like missing children alerts). Often these tales started out true. Many missing children posts began as truth. A lost stuffed animal's journey began as truth, but I continue to see the picture of the "missing" lion popping up on Facebook, even though the story has already had its happy ending.

Here are some of the types of posts that almost immediately make me pause and verify before sharing:

  • Reports of the death of anyone famous
  • Requests to help find missing people
  • Photographs circulating during and after disasters (Just look at all the pics supposedly related to Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy. Anyone ever heard of Photoshop?)
  • Any report of a scandal
  • Stories/photographs that support a specific political point of view. (Even the views I agree with. Especially those! Why would I want to damage a cause I believe in by spreading falsehoods?)

It is hard to categorize everything that gives me pause, which nowadays is almost anything. But whenever I experience a mental "Hmmm..." alert after seeing something online, especially when social media is the first place I see it, I

  • Head to Google where I specifically look for news references if it is a current event topic. And I try to find verification on two or more sites.
  • And/Or I go to snopes.com if it seems to be something that might have been around for a while.

Whether I verify the information or not, if I choose to correct or reshare, I always include a link to a reliable source with the information. Again, hoping to model appropriate sharing for my online connections.

I Hate to Say it, but We Need to Trust Less

In the digital age, it is too easy to spread inaccurate information. Many of us who remember getting information pre-Internet have not made the mental transition from the days of print media and the days when news came to us only through networks on television. We trusted that what we read and heard from journalists had been verified. Frankly, many people, regardless of their age, are just gullible, assuming if it's online, it's true.

Who's With Me?

As I write this, one year is ending and another is beginning. But no matter when you are reading it, I hope you will join me in a resolution to promote truth

I would love it if you would share in the comments below your thoughts on this topic, ways you verify information which finds you online, or information you shared a correction on because you found it to be false. It will be encouraging to know we have partners in the truth crusade! :-)
