How to Promote your Blog without Spending Too Much Time

<b>How to Promote</b> your <b>Blog</b> without Spending Too Much Time

imageYou've got awesome content in place – but your blog is still a ghost town…

What gives?

When blogs first built massive audiences in the early 2000s, it was a heck of a lot easier to attract a dedicated following.  Blogs at the time were new and fascinating, and those that managed to hit on a niche grew explosively in popularity.

Now it's a different story…you're out of the loop if you're not blogging.

You can't just blog and hope for visitors anymore – promotion is necessary if you want to have any chance at building your audience at all.

If you're not careful, you can easily spend more time promoting your blog than you have hours in a day.  So, if you have a limited amount of time, what do you do?

I suggest you follow these steps:

1.  Consistently Write Great Content

This is still the first part of the equation.  Your content has to be unique and fascinating.  You should have at least 10 posts or so before you even start thinking of building an audience.

Try different things.  Go highly in-depth with your content.  Keep some posts shorter.  Use infographics, video, regular graphics, and create your own graphical information.

Whatever you do, give it your very, very best.

2.  Build Relationships with B-Level Bloggers

Going for the A-listers – that takes time, networking, luck, and you have to be a master in your niche to have any chance at getting published on the big-name blogs.  You can certainly go for them, but focus the brunt of your time on going for those blogs just below everyone's radar.

What types of blogs are these?  They usually have a page rank of 3-5, posts with 3-10 comments, and a couple thousand social media followers.  You can get in with these guys much easier, and you can receive some decent traffic from many of them.

Then, all you do is write a good guest post, and that gets you 20-40 unique visits per month right there.

3.  Participate in High-Traffic, Relevant Forums

Ahh the forum.  It flies way below everyone's radar these days,  but it works incredibly well for links and traffic.  Google's slowly working on phasing out the value of the links forums provide, but you can get some very nice traffic.

The key here is to provide awesome answers to people's questions.  The better the answer, the more people read it, and the more traffic you get.  With the links, which help you rank organically (and still do as far as I know), just make sure 80% of the link text does not target your primary keywords.

4.  Reach out to Influencers

Getting in touch with people who have large social media followings is a tough endeavor.  It takes a ton of time, but if you want to create a blog with a massive following, you're at the mercy of the "big dogs."

The Skyscraper Technique, created by Brian Dean of Backlinko, maximizes the results you get from contacting influencers.  This is what you do:

  • Identify top influencers in your niche
  • Check out the types of content they're sharing
  • View the comments and social shares those posts receive
  • Create content on the same topic, but take a different angle or go much farther in-depth
  • Contact the influencer on social media, notifying them of the content, and invite them to check it out
  • If you've created awesome content, they'll share it with their audience

5.  Do Organic SEO

It's very hard to rank your blog posts individually.  I've tried it and have done better when not trying at all.  To get a blog post to rank for a search, do keyword research in Adwords.  You're generally looking for keywords with a few hundred to a couple thousand searches per month.

Make sure the target keyword appears in the post's title.  Add a couple other keywords throughout the post.  From there, you cross your fingers and hope.  If you really want the post to rank, build links to it.  But, there's not promises on how that'll work.

The better SEO to do is the following:

  • Link off your post to credible third-party sources (makes you look good to Google and your readers)
  • Add a link or two to various important pages on your website
  • Make sure the anchor text on your links is keyword-rich less than 10% of the time
  • Optimize the alt tags on images
  • Create in-depth content (1000 words+) consistently
  • Share it on social media
  • Get target keywords for your website into the posts

That type of SEO is more reliable and yields stable long-term results.

6.  Content Syndication Networks

Credit Quicksprout for this tip.  You know those groups of pictures you see at the bottom of websites like Huffington Post and Forbes?

Those are content syndication networks.  Yeah, they're kind of spammy, but Quicksprout's information is always as good as gold.  Zemanta is a good one.

The process for you is easy:

  • Check out which posts of yours have done well
  • Identify a budget (these networks charge a pay-per-click cost)
  • Analyze the content network's results, and adjust your tactics over time

7.  Participate in Social Sharing Communities like Reddit and StumbleUpon

When you do participate, do so with the intention of contributing value.  Just dropping a link or a simple "thank you" comment won't get you very far.

Also, keep your eyes open for what topics trend on these communities.  That gives you ideas for future posts.

8.  Make Sure You Have a Great Design

The "feel" of  your website – how it initially looks to your visitors – has a lot to do with how much they comment, like, and how long they stay on your site.

Make sure you have an attractive, professional design.  If you can scrape up the cash, have a pro do the design.  Or, talk a friend or family member into it.

Do whatever you have to in order to make it look good and load fast – that makes it something people want to share.

So, I can't tell you in what ratios you should use those tactics, but those are the most effective ones I know about.

What tactics do you think give you the best return for your time?  Let me know in the comments below:

promoting-content

This week, for the fifth article in our Inbound Marketing Series, we'll be providing tips and industry best practices on the best ways to promote and market your blog content. Last week, we talked about creating remarkable content for your business blog, so if you haven't read it, you'll want to check that out first.

Congratulations, You just published your first blog post! But before you can relax and check Google Analytics to see how many people have read your post, you'll need to do a little more work.  Remember, there's so much content on the web, that unless you promote your blog, it probably won't be found.  Inbound Marketing is a great way to present your posts to your target audience.

If you are persistent and properly promote your blog from the get-go, you'll start receiving organic traffic and it WILL  continue to increase over time. We suggest you follow the methods we discuss below, but remember to be prepared to wait at least 2-3 months for decent traffic to begin to flow.

promoting-blogs-online

Follow these five steps with every new blog post and you will see an uptick in your blog readership and website traffic:

#1 – Add Sharing Buttons To Your Blog

Social media sharing buttons can be added to your blog very simply if you use a CMS like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal or Magento using any social media sharing plugin or widget. We recommend using AddToAny or ShareThis to get all-purpose social sharing buttons for your blog.

#2 – Broadcast Your New Content on Social Media

Post a status update on your Facebook Page to let people quickly know what your new post is about and try to include an image with it. Posts with images on Facebook receive 53% more likes than the average post.  Announce your post on the rest of your social sites like LinkedInGoogle+ and even Pinterest.  You can also Instagram an image from your latest blog to grab your followers attention and let them know that you have new content posted.

Twitter is a little different when it comes to promoting your blog.  Considering the fast-paced micro-style environment of Twitter, it is acceptable to repeatedly post links to your new blog post throughout the month of initial posting. Just don't overdo it,  3-5 times spread out through the day is perfect. Try tweeting the headline with a link, quotes from the post, or interesting facts and stats that are included in the new blog content.

#3 – Submit Your Content to News & Bookmarking Sites

After you've hit your social media audience, it's time to try to branch out. A great way to do that is through social bookmarking and news sites. These are online communities, blog sharing sites and directories where people share links they find interesting.

Here are some examples of popular social news and bookmarking sites. You may have to play around on these sites a little to understand how they work, but it's worth it. They also all require you to register an account before you can submit links:

Beware: these sites should NOT be used solely for shameless self promotion; you have to become an active member of the community and gain authority in order for other viewers to really engage with your content. In order to begin submitting your links to these kind of sites, you'll first need to find and share interesting articles besides your own, and like/comment on other people's submissions. Once you've become an active member, these sites can help you reach a much wider audience.

#4 – Syndicate Your Content

Content syndication is the process of pushing your blog, site, or video content out into third-party sites, either as a full article, snippet, link, or thumbnail.  The benefit or value of syndicating your content isn't necessarily to make money from it.  In this case, you are looking for additional target consumer traffic that you can receive for free by simply using other sites to republish  posts or articles. The additional exposure will help boost traffic to your blog.

Here are some site's we recommend to make syndicating your blog posts super easy:

  • IFTTT.com – allows you to syndicate to over 50 different sites.
  • BlogCatalog.com – helps you connect with other bloggers to share ideas and posts.
  • NetworkedBlogs.com – Get found and get more traffic when you submit your blog, also links to Facebook.
  • Syndic8.com – syndicates blogs that cover a wide variety of topics, one of the most popular syndication services.
  • Blogdash.com – the source for reader reviews of the web's bloggers and columnists.
  • Amazon.com – did you know you could submit your blog posts to Amazon.  Go to: https://kindlepublishing.amazon.com/gp/vendor and get paid when a Kindle owner reads it!
  • Outbrain.com – syndicates your blog posts to sites like CNN.com and FastCompany.com.

#5 – Send Your Contacts an Email or Newsletter with Your Content

Last but not least, it's always a good idea to engage the people that are already signed up to receive your  newsletter or subscribe to your blog by sending them an email or link to your RSS feed. You can plan to send out weekly or monthly e-newsletter with links to 3-4 of your latest blog posts alongside short yet compelling descriptions. Another way you could circulate your new content is by adding your latest blog post to your email signature (check out Wisestamp.com for more on that).  If you add an RSS feed to your blog, your subscribes can automatically receive notifications when you publish new material.

Get Creative When Promoting Your Blog Posts

There are many other creative ways to promote your blog post. Don't be afraid to try something new! The important thing is to keep innovating and stick to the things you see that are working for your business.

What do you think? Have you used any of these methods to promote your blog? Do you have another, outside-the-box idea for promoting your blog posts? Please let us know your suggestions in the comments below.

Company blogs have become virtually essential, and very powerful, component of digital marketing. According to recent research, more than half (52%) of consumers say blogs have impacted their purchase decisions; and 57% of marketers say they've acquired new customers with their blogs.

But creating and maintaining a successful blog takes more than just producing helpful and original content; as social media expert Heidi Cohen recently wrote, "The most epic content will FAIL without content distribution. If no one sees your content, what good is it?"

So, once you've created great content, how do you get it "out there"? Which content promotion tools are most useful? Which blog post promotion tactics are most effective? Is it still worthwhile to get listed in blog directories, and if so, which ones?

Find the answers to these questions and more here among hundreds of recommendations about tools, tactics and techniques to promote blog posts.

Fives ways to effectively gain traffic to your blog

Fives ways to effectively gain traffic to your blog

You have created your blog but without traffic? This is the basic problem for the new bloggers yet it can be solved in due time.

In gaining traffic and visitors in a blog, a diligent work must be done. This is not an easy work for the blogger as he toils not in a short time but until he has traffic enough to be satisfied.

What's worth a blog without readers? Thousands of bloggers attempt to start their journey in blogging but the stumblingblock always lies in having traffic. It centers more on how to promote the blog in all possible ways.

I started blogging in 2006 and I learned a lot of ways on how to promote blog in different ways. Because of the changes in recent years, there's also got to be new styles of promoting blog especially these days that social media controls the minds of the readers.

Here are ways to promote your blog to gain traffic:

1. Content is king – Write articles that benefit your readers. An article that is well-written can absolutely gain traffic as it will be mentioned by the reader to his friends. Article that is concise and grammatically correct will captivate the attention of your possible future readers.

In the realm of article writing, originality is always on top into consideration. Of course the profundity of thoughts is also important to go deep through the minds of your followers.

The content is the apple of the eyes of the readers. It is the doorway to their heart and to be in loved with your blog. Once you have a great blog content, you can do the next step.

2. Include your site to Google – Google is the single most popular website in the world. Submitting the URL of your blog to Google will be the necessary in exploiting the millions of daily visitors in the search engine.

A. Submit your URL to Google at submit using your Google Webmastertools.
B. In submitting, you need to have your sitemap. You can install Google Sitemap Plugin.

After adding your blog to Google, then it's time to add it also to Bing.com, the second top search engine.

3. Use Social Media like Facebook and Google Plus – Your content makes you feel demanding on more readers. It's time to use social media especially Facebook in promoting your blog. Tell your Facebook friends that you have a blog worth reading and that they can enjoy it. Post your article in Facebook and ask your friends to share it. In my future posts I will share steps-by-steps on how to promote blog in Facebook.

Fives ways to effectively gain traffic to your blog

Fives ways to effectively gain traffic to your blog

After Facebook, then you can maximize your Google Plus which is second to Google in social media. Create a profile in Google Plus and share your posts also.

There's also Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Linkind, Blogger, Tumbler, Stumbleupon, WordPress, Flickr, Typepad, SoundCloud, etc…

4. Create Videos – You can also use videos in promoting your blog. Create a video that has a potential to become viral. In the video, never forget to mention or add the URL of your blog. Truly, one of the effective ways though this can also be under social media.

5. Join Forums – It's not out of sight yet. Forums are still popular these days and that they have impact in a community. In joining a community through forums, you can add other networks to view your blog.

It consumes ample of time in learning these three ways of promoting your blog. Once you mastered all these five things, reward will come as you see staggering increase in your traffic and visitors.

There are still many ways to promote your blog but I believe these are the best ways in terms of their significance.

<b>How To Promote</b> Your Music - The Ultimate Guide - Music Think Tank

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 04:00 AM PST

Hello again, my Music Think Tankers. Today I'm going to look at 6 HUGE things you can do to better promote your music.

Now before you roll your eyes and think I'm going to tell you to "create a Facebook account and promote through social media" or to "get your music in as many places as possible," listen up. This guide is going to be full of actionable content and advice that won't be found in every post on the subject that simply rehashes information the writer has heard and not tried out themselves.

By the end of this post I want you to walk away with at least a few things you may not have thought about before, and can start implementing in your music career. So with that in mind, read on, take notes, and share this guide if you find it useful. And be sure to check out my free music marketing ebook afterward to get extra advice and tips for getting your music out there.

Top ways to promote your music from @musicthinktank and @imusicadvice!! - Tweet This

1. Climb the Ladder with Your Collaboration Efforts

OK, so the first thing you can do to promote your music better isn't actually something many musicians associate with actually being a form of promotion. Collaborating with other musicians can actually be a great way to get out there. Making songs with a well known act can actually mean you can get in front of their fans. It may also mean that you gain a higher perceived value for working with that act, and it can be a good note on your CV when looking for other music related work and opportunities.

The thing is though, it's very unlikely you'll get collaborations with big names in your genre (unless you already know them). You see, their time is precious, and they're not just going to collaborate with every up and coming act out there. The solution? Using the 'ladder' method.

What you want to do is categorize any talented musicians in your genre into different levels based on how big they are. Usually, while the biggest acts won't be willing to work with you at this stage, some of the lower level acts will be - with enough incentive. So what you do is approach those acts which are slightly bigger then you, and do collaborations with a few of them. Not only does this get you in front of their audiences, but it also gets you associated with being at their level.

Once this is done, start looking to the next step of musicians who are that bit more popular then the last group you approached (and are now in yourself). Do the same; collaborate with them, get in front of their audience, and become thought of as being on their level.

Rinse and repeat, each time working with bigger acts and getting a bigger reputation yourself. The good thing is, once people start seeing you're working with lots of people in your genre, they will want to start working with you too. You'll be the hip new people on the block that everyone wants to be associated with.

2. Climb the Ladder with Media Outlets You Try to Get On

OK, this method of promotion is pretty similar to the last one, only with platforms to get yourself out there.

If you've ever tried to get covered by a big website, TV channel or radio station, chances are you didn't hear back from them, or got rejected. Again, these places aren't looking to work with just anyone; you need to prove you're noteworthy and worthwhile for them using one of their exposure slots. As you may have guessed, the above ladder method works here too.

Start out by getting on smaller platforms and websites, and build your way up. Get all of these previous places you've appeared on your music CV. Include their logos on your website. Make it clear people are talking about you.

Gradually build things up, networking with new people along the way. You will find more and bigger opportunities become available to you, as the music industry is full of people who don't care until you say you've worked with 'x' amount of their competitors. So keep climbing that ladder.

3. Master Your Gigging Game

So I could say to you, "Gig because it's good exposure and you can make money from it." I want to give you more, though. The thing is, anyone can gig. That said, what are you doing to set your gigs apart from 95% of other musicians in your genre?!

Practicing your lyrics is one thing, but mastering your show is something else altogether. Remember, as a musician you are an entertainer! It's your job to entertain. Yes, that might just be in the form of your voice in rare cases, but in the majority of cases your whole stage presence also factors into things.

When people leave your show, are they going to remember you as that person with good lyrics and a good voice? Or will they remember you as that person who stood out and outshone all the other performing acts that night? I hope you aim to achieve the second one.

So what can you do to achieve that? Well first of all, find out what works in terms of stage presence. Load up YouTube and search for the best live acts in your genre. See how they command the stage, see how they move, and see how they interact with the audience. Does it work? Is it something you can do and build on? Most of the time it will be, so be sure to build yourself as a overall great performer, rather then just someone who has good vocal ability.

4. How to Promote Your Music Online: Schedule Your Social Updates

All right, let's move on to how to promote your music online. While you all know you should be taking part in social networking, there's one thing you can do to make things a lot easier in that area: Scheduling your social updates! While this isn't possible when you're replying to people who interact with you (which you should be doing), you can schedule updates for your fans with new content and conversation starters.

For example, let's say you have a gig tonight. You may be very busy just before it, and you know you won't have any time to communicate with your fans on social sites around that time. In this case, what you could do is schedule two updates for Facebook and Twitter. The first could go something like this:

"Not long ago arrived at * venue name * and can't wait to perform. Any of you here? If so come and say hi and wish me luck!"

You can also schedule another update for later, such as:

"The show tonight went well, I can't wait to share the pictures with you. Give me time to go home and sleep & I'll get them up tomorrow ;)"

These kind of updates are of course based on things you know are going to happen, yet they will mean you can encourage communication with your fans at a time which is easier for you.

So how do you schedule your social updates? Well my favorite method is via the free tool Hootsuite. Have a look, if you ask me it's a must use tool for all musicians.

5. Take Advantage of Email Marketing

Email marketing is something I'm surprised I don't see more musicians taking advantage of. My guess is this is either due to the lack of understanding of how to use it, or because of the cost involved. Or both. That said, bear in mind it could end up being one of your most effective ways to communicate with fans, so once you start building up a fan base you should give it a go.

The advantage with email marketing over Facebook and Twitter is your message gets to more people then it would on alternative platforms. As you probably know, Facebook makes it so only a small percentage of your fans see any message you post. With Twitter, if your followers aren't online around the time you send your Tweets out, chances are they won't see them.

With email though, once it's sent, it sits there until your email subscribers see the message. It doesn't go anywhere, and it's not as time sensitive.

There are a lot of other reasons why emails are also effective, but I won't list them all here. Instead you can check out this guide on list building for musicians, and see for yourself why you need it. I also let you know how to get started with this form of promotion, so give it a try.

6. Don't Just Update on Twitter, Seek Conversations

My last music marketing tip for the day: Be proactive with your approach to Twitter marketing. I see people get this wrong all the time. They think that all they need to do to promote their music on Twitter is to add a load of random people, then keep Tweeting about things related to themselves. In reality, this is a huge waste of your time.

Real Twitter promotion is all about building connections. You want to seek out conversations relevant to you and get involved.

For example, let's say you make music and are similar to Coldplay. What you'll want to do is search for conversations based around Coldplay, and see the results. Be sure to click 'all' under the section 'Results for coldplay.' This will bring up all people recently talking about them. Next, literally start talking to these people. Let them know you're into Coldplay too, and for those that respond and seem interested, mention that you make similar music which they may want to check out. So people will end up doing that.

I don't advise you mention your music the first time around, because people usually put up barriers against you once they feel you're trying to promote to them on initial contact. But after swapping a Tweet or three, they'll be much more likely to give you a try if they think you're a cool person.

You will also want to give them a follow after their first reply, too, as this will increase the chances they'll follow you back and see your music related updates.

And That's THE BEGINNING of How to Promote Your Music

And that's it, six big (and often not talked about) tips for promoting your music. That said, this isn't everything you need to know in terms of getting your music out there. There are a lot more music marketing tips you can and should learn, and I aim to give you those here today. If you haven't already, you'll want to check out my free ebook on the subject (download it here). Inside I start to look at the finer details of music promotion, such as how much you should be doing it, when, and why. I also look at some additional things you need to think about to start getting your music marketing mentality right. Furthermore, you can check this guide for 6 additional music marketing tips.

I hope you found this guide useful and have some things you can start implementing ASAP. If so, please give it a share, and let your fellow musicians check it out too. I'm sure we'll speak again soon. :)

As many of you know—especially if you've been reading my blog posts—the participation of women in computer science continues to decline. Last year, women accounted for only 14 percent of computer science college graduates in the United States, according to the Computing Research Association. That's down from 37 percent in 1985, despite US Department of Labor statistics that show computing to be among the fastest-growing career fields, with a shortage of qualified candidates to fill available openings. In addition, studies reveal that executives value the variety of perspectives that comes with team diversity, yet another reason for needing greater female participation in computing fields.

Innovate to impact the world.

As a technology company and innovation leader, Microsoft is passionate about increasing the participation of women in computing. To do so, we must attract more female students to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs. To maintain their interest in STEM programs, we can increase young women's exposure to the myriad opportunities in computer science and provide them with support during their undergraduate and graduate STEM studies. This is why Microsoft Research is proud to support the NCWIT Academic Alliance Seed Fund and to fund the Microsoft Research Graduate Women's Scholarship.

The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) is a non-profit community of more than 500 universities, companies, non-profits, and government organizations nationwide working to increase women's participation in computing and technology. NCWIT helps organizations more effectively recruit, retain, and advance girls and women in K-12 through college education, and from academic to corporate and startup careers. The NCWIT Academic Alliance brings together nearly 750 distinguished representatives from academic computing programs at more than 275 colleges and universities across the country—spanning research universities, community colleges, women's colleges, and minority-serving institutions. In 2007, Microsoft Research initiated the Seed Fund in partnership with NCWIT Academic Alliance. The NCWIT Academic Alliance Seed Fund provides US academic institutions with grants (up to US$10,000 per project) to develop and implement initiatives for recruiting and retaining women in computer science and information technology fields of study. Through 2013, the Seed Fund had awarded US$465,450.

In partnership with NCWIT Academic Alliance, we are pleased to announce the 2014 winners:

  • College of St. Scholastica (Jennifer Rosato)
Promoting Female and Diverse Student Retention through Faculty Use of a Growth Mindset Approach
This project will provide professional development for faculty at The College of St. Scholastica, helping them to instil a growth mindset among women and minority students who are majoring in computer science and associated concentrations, as well as fostering the continued interest of students taking pre-engineering courses.
  • Georgia Gwinnett College (Sonal Dekhane, Kristine Nagel, and Nannette Napier)
Georgia Gwinnett College Women in IT Boot Camp
A weeklong workshop, the boot camp will give 24 promising female IT sophomores an opportunity to get a head start in programming.
  • South Carolina Technical College System (Stephanie Frazier and Salandra Bowman)
    SCTCS Triple A Academy
The academy will immerse 10 to 14 female students—each of whom is enrolled in a certificate, diploma, or degree IT program—in a one-week program that promotes ability, acuity, and audacity (the triple As) in IT-related fields.
  • Tufts University (Benjamin Shapiro)
Engaging Women in Computing through Musical Instrument and Performance
This unique project will design a curriculum and an accompanying set of hardware and software tools that teach computational thinking and engineering through the design and construction of tangible, programmable electronic musical instruments that youth can use for live performances.
  • University of Arizona (Gondy Leroy and Paulo Goes)
    Tomorrow's Leaders Equipped for Diversity
The university's department of management information systems (MIS) will team with industry to make computer science and MIS students aware of diversity issues, with a special focus on gender, preparing the students to be leaders and managers who are equipped to both counter the problems and leverage the benefits of diversity.

In addition, we know that a woman's first two years of computer science graduate study are the most critical. During this time, she must determine her area of focus, increase her confidence in the field, enhance her capabilities in publishing and research, and build her network. This is why Microsoft Research created the Graduate Women's Scholarship, which provides a US$15,000 stipend, plus a US$2,000 travel and conference allowance, to women in their second year of graduate study at a US or Canadian university. The scholarship helps recipients gain visibility in their departments, acquire mentorship, and cover the burgeoning cost of graduate programs.

We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 Microsoft Research Graduate Women's Scholarship:

  • Anne Holladay, Carnegie Mellon University
  • Claire Chow, University of Notre Dame
  • Yunmeng Ban, University of Massachusetts Amherst
  • Sruthi Polali, Rice University
  • Nan-Chen Chen, University of Washington
  • Ghazal Fazelnia, Columbia University
  • Tesca Fitzgerald, Georgia Institute of Technology
  • Angelica Ruszkowski, University of British Columbia
  • Brooke Fugate, University of Pennsylvania
  • Elizabeth Mamantov, University of Michigan

Congratulations to all the winning programs and students. We look forward to great things from 2014's women in computing.

Rane Johnson-Stempson, Principal Research Director, Education and Scholarly Communication, Microsoft Research Connections

<b>How to Promote</b> Your <b>Blog</b> Content - Taylor Clark

Content marketing is considered the "it thing" to do if you're trying to promote your brand or business online, but a lot of people are unaware of how to do it successfully.  A successful content marketing plan requires a mix of search engine optimization, social media promotion, email marketing and of course, good content.  In order to promote your blog content, you have to utilize multiple resources to expose your followers to your new content and potentially reach new readers.  To do this successfully, however, you have to know where to start.

Develop a Plan to Promote Your Blog Content

In order to properly promote your blog content, you need to have a plan in place that you will repeat, time and time again, each time you publish a new post.  While it may sound a bit repetitive, it's 100% necessary to get the results your hoping for by publishing content online.  I encounter a lot of people (and was guilty of it myself years ago) who get discouraged when their strategy doesn't work immediately, it's important to remember that content marketing isn't an instant gratification process.  There will be a wait time.

The beauty of content marketing is that it can generate a huge following, drive visitors and ultimately, if you've done things right, increase sales.  What discourages many people though, is not seeing an immediate reaction (or success) after they promote their content online.  If you're just starting out in the content marketing world, remember that you're not going to have an immediate following.  If you're Twitter following includes 12 people, and 8 of those people are your existing employees or friends, you may not immediately get the response you wanted, but don't give up!

For this reason specifically we need to develop a content marketing strategy to slowly generate more interest in your blog content over time.  While the results won't be instant, over time this strategy will prove worth every bit of effort you put into it.

1. Optimize Your Blog Content for Search Engines

If you want your blog content to be read by people looking for answers, you need to optimize your blog posts for search engines.  In order to do this, you need to go into your post knowing what keywords or keyword phrases you want to optimize for as you write your content, and utilize them as you write.

If you've checked out my marketing toolkit, you know that I use WordPress SEO by Yoast to optimize my blog posts.  While there is debate as to whether or not it's the best option, I find that it makes it extremely easy to get the basics of SEO handled for each page/post I publish.

Keep in mind, that while your post may be optimized for search engines, that doesn't mean it's going to rank well or even generate new visitors to your site, it just sets up the framework to start the process.  If your content isn't worth reading, don't expect great results regardless of how well optimized your post may be.

2. Share Your Blog Post on Facebook

You know just as well as I do that the entire world is addicted to Facebook.  With that knowledge, it should come as no surprise that one of the best ways to get a buzz going is to share your blog post on Facebook.  When you share your post, make sure that you're either using a tool that will share your featured image, or that you publish manually and include a large format image.  Don't forget, images can help people click your post and read your content, pick a good one.

3.  Tweet Your Content on Twitter

While sharing to Facebook is great, I find that if I want to reach people I don't know personally, Twitter is the best place to do it.  When sharing your content on Twitter, make sure that you include the big 3 in your Tweet:

  • Intriguing/informative tweet with post title
  • Link to your article
  • Relevant hashtags

Make sure that the tweet includes something that will create enough interest to get your followers to click the link.  "Check out my latest post" may not work nearly as well as "The 10 Best Ways to Sell Everything," as it doesn't provide any information about the post's content.

HootSuite: Manage and Measure your Social Media

4.  Post Your Blog Post to Google+

Preface:  I don't care if you hate Google+, the bottom line is that Google loves Google+, so you really don't have a choice.

Google+ has become a much bigger network than anyone ever expected (likely because Google forced everyone onto it) and that means that you need to be sharing your posts there.  Aside from the potential SEO benefits, if you're using Google Authorship, you will want to build a following on G+ to help become a recognized and trusted name.

5.  Share on LinkedIn and LinkedIn Groups

You probably don't check LinkedIn unless you received a recommendation or you're searching for a new job, but it's worth sharing.  LinkedIn is a great resource when used properly, and can help you brand yourself as an authority on your topic.  Don't expect a major response like you would on Facebook or Twitter, but for a complete content marketing strategy, LinkedIn is a necessity.

If you're a more active LinkedIn user (which I recommend that you become) share your post in relevant groups that you may be a part of.  Despite your personal use level, LinkedIn groups are quite active and depending on your niche, can be a great way to get your content in front of the eyes that need it most.

6. Email an Update to Your Email List

If you're not utilizing email marketing to help drive visitors to your content, start immediately.  People who subscribe to your email list are 100% fans, they have told you that they absolutely want to see more content from you simply by subscribing to your newsletter.  Don't let them down, share your latest posts to your subscriber list every time you post.

When you send out an email, don't just announce that you posted an article.  Include a brief summary with a catchy "call to action" that will encourage them to click and read the article.

7. Keep Sharing Your Content

If you haven't done so yet, and you're using WordPress for your blog, take a look at my marketing toolkit and get a the Tweet Old Post plugin.  This plugin will regularly share your post, and all of your other posts, at an interval set on your website.  Twitter is a quick moving network, the more you tweet about your posts, the more chances you have that people will see your content.

Note:  If your post is news related or outdated, make sure it's excluded from being shared over and over.  You don't want to be caught sharing an article about a Facebook update from 2 years ago that isn't even functional anymore (yes, I'm guilty of this and was quite embarrassed when someone called me out on it).

Don't Give Up, Never Surrender

I cannot stress enough that the most important part of your content marketing strategy is to never, ever give up on it.  There is no such thing as immediate results or instant gratification in the content marketing world, unless of course you already have a huge following.  If you did, you probably wouldn't be asking for help.  Remember that these steps are the absolute essentials, there are plenty of other networks that you can utilize to market your content online that may work well for your industry.

Check out my marketing toolkit for some essential tools to make the most of your content marketing experience.

Video Online Marketing

Video Online Marketing Cloud

YouTube is a popular video hosting site which allows registered users to upload videos which are shared with the online community. There are literally millions of videos uploaded and viewed every single day. With this type of competition how are you certain that your videos are ones that will actually be seen by those you want it to reach?  It takes some time to create videos to upload to the site and you want to be assured that they are viewed by your intended audience. YouTube videos can be an integral part of a social media or digital marketing campaign. But just because you have created a video that is informative or entertaining does not mean that the online community will flock to it – just because. There are some reliable methods and strategies that can be employed to ensure that it gets in front of your audience. Here are some ways to promote a YouTube video.

Promote your video on your email List

For those who already have an email campaign in place, it can provide a perfect platform for promoting your latest YouTube video. Depending on your setup, you may want to craft an email that is specifically dedicated to promoting the latest video upload; or you may simply want to share the link inside your regular email campaign. Either way, you are making use of a valuable platform that is already in place. Plus, you already have an audience that is interested in what you have to say.

The social media Connection

Whenever you upload a new video, send out a tweet announcing the news. You may also update your status on Facebook to share the new upload. Facebook allows a user to embed a YouTube video in their status update. This can be very beneficial when you want others to know about your latest video. Pinterest also allows videos to be pinned to a virtual pinboard. Video uploads can also be promoted on the various social bookmarking sites. Most social media sites are interactive and allow for videos to be shared in some way. Use what you have. Whichever social networks you are associated with and using on a regular basis can become a useful platform through which your YouTube videos are promoted. It is also beneficial to add the social media icons to your videos so that others can share it on their accounts.

Use your blog to promote your YouTube Videos

Your blog is a great place to promote your latest video. With an established blog, you already have a platform and readers in place. Dedicate a blog post to discussing the latest video and its significance and embed its link in the post. Each time you upload a new video, use your blog to describe it and tell your audience why they should check it out. You may also use later posts to refer back to the video when it is relevant.

Create a Custom YouTube Channel

There can be a huge difference between simply having a lot of SEO videos on YouTube and creating a series of credible, valuable and interesting videos. Displaying your videos on a single customized YouTube channel adds credibility and makes you appear more professional. It also helps you send a more cohesive message rather than appearing disjointed to your audience.

Employ SEO Strategies

A YouTube video can be optimized so that it is easier for the search engines to "find". Use relevant keywords when constructing your video's title and description. Use your tags; you do not have to go overboard, but always include any relevant tags. You can also check after a few weeks to see what keywords are helping the video be found by users and then add or remove tags as needed. If you need to, do a little research and find the right keywords which are relevant to your content. Your main keywords should be added at the front of a title, description or tag. It's okay to add your brand name or the name of your website at the end of the title, but put the primary keywords upfront. You may also add annotations to your video along with a transcription of the video content.

<b>Promoting</b> a New <b>Blog</b> | Common SEO Questions

Posted: 04 Feb 2014 12:50 AM PST

When starting a new blog, there are many things you can do to promote your voice to the world. You must first find yourself a great idea, do all your research, and start the writing process. Make sure that you have a good digital marketing strategy, a market where people are spending money, and create your niche. Here are some tips on what to do after you have created the next best blog to advertise it to the world.

Multiple Personalities

A blogger must utilize many traits to do all the required work of posting a blog and advertising. As a blogger, you must have good ideas, be good at design, be able to write well, and, finally, be able to execute your plan flawlessly. Once you have your blog ready and you want to publish your first post and before you actually publish your article, try to think of as many ways as you can to advertise the blog to find the most views.

Work Harder than Anyone Else

If you really want to make good money from your blog, you will have to work extremely hard to get what you want. Be ready to roll your sleeves up and get a little bit dirty. If you do the work, be ready to reap the rewards. They may not come in an instant, and it may be a bumpy road to get to it, but do not give up where everyone else fails. Keep pushing until you find what you have been looking for.

Daily Schedule

After figuring out what goals you want to achieve, make progress toward making those goals come true. By doing what needs to be done you will find success. Blogging presents many opportunities to the writer. You must be willing to put forth a little effort every day though. Write a plan that you can commit to following every day.  Have it written up and pull it out each morning. Fill your plan with tasks meant to grow your business. For instance, a daily plan that includes writing three articles and making 100 personal contacts will help you spread the word about your blog. These actions will facilitate sales and help your business to grow.

Promote as Much as Possible

The first 60 days of a blog are the most important. Avoid tweaking your site at all once you begin. Build up a community, get yourself out there, brand yourself, and talk to everyone you come in contact with. You have to sell yourself as much as you can and believe in your blog. Ignore the looks and focus on the content of your blog. Try to write posts that really matter.

Refuse to Place Ads

By refusing to place ads in the beginning, you will save yourself time and energy on something that is not going to make you very much. Strive to create a winning business blog. Focus on building your business and attaching as many people as possible. When you have a large number of hits coming to your site every day, then you can think about placing ads. Now that you have more traffic, you will make more off of the ads you place.

Launch

When you launch the blog, have twenty or thirty great articles already written. Take a lot of time in creating this framework for your blog. Show off your great content and take time to express your expertise. This is the foundation of a business. Create strong content that will be sure to attract more readers. These readers will want to know what you are all about.

Networking

Networking is extremely important in this people oriented business. You should find the top twenty five blogs in your genre, read them, and get acquainted with the authors. These people are already successful doing what you want to do, and will have a lot of information to share.

Participate in the Community

Make sure that you are trying to build links, and participating in others blogs as well. Comment on others blogs and talk to other posters from all over the world. Start building a list of e-mails as soon as you begin so your blogs newsletter has plenty of recipients. The last tip that is very important to follow is respond to your readers.  Build relationships with the people around you and do not worry about being promotional. Attract fellow readers with your words and your personality.

There are so many things you can do to promote a new blog. You have to work harder than anyone else if you really want it. Follow a daily schedule with certain goals aimed at improving your business. Promote yourself to everyone you talk to and post your links on relevant forums. Refuse to place ads until you have a lot of traffic on your site. Be prepared when you launch. Network as much as possible and participate in the online community. By following these tips, you should be able to start a blog, and hopefully get a good flow of traffic to it.

YouTube

YouTube Channel

YouTube has grown to be the second largest search engine anywhere. For those who want to use videos as part of their digital marketing strategy, YouTube is likely the most powerful platform available. Video marketing can be an effective way to market and promote a brand, product or service. YouTube is a platform that allows users to upload videos. For the business it means uploading highly customized videos that can demonstrate their expertise and knowledge, offer how-to videos for consumers or showcase products and services. One of the greatest benefits of YouTube is that it is far reaching and can potentially go viral for little or no cost at all. Setting up a YouTube channel is relatively easy; promoting it is the next logical step.

What is a YouTube Channel?

Joining YouTube is a relatively simple process. Once you have an account, you can log in and customize how your account is going to look. You may also add personalized items such as a logo. When designing your YouTube channel, keep your brand in mind. YouTube can be an essential method for helping promote your brand so it must be at the forefront of your thinking. Once the account is created you will have access to several sections which you can choose to display or hide. You can also select various options that allow your channel to be uniquely yours. Establishing a channel gives you a platform which can be used to connect with your audience through the use of videos.

How to choose a Name for a YouTube Channel

It is advisable to go ahead and obtain a custom channel. This will make sure that the YouTube channel is branded for your business. Not only will it offer you a better way to represent your message, but it will also make your video series take on a more professional look. Choosing a name can be difficult in some cases. You want to choose a name that will be easy for others to remember and if it is at all possible, use your business name or at least some of your more prominent and relevant keywords. If you have numerous social networks or sites which are used in conjunction with your business you may want to use a word which identifies it as a "channel." You may want to select a name such as "yourbusinessnametv," or "yourbusinessnamechannel."

Creating a Trailer

One of the features you will have when you set up a YouTube channel is the ability to upload a trailer. It can be set up so that it only displays when a non-subscriber visits your channel. This trailer is a video which allows you to show off your channel and try to encourage viewers to become subscribers. Using one of your uploaded videos, YouTube will allow you to select a trailer. Or you can choose to enter a YouTube URL for the trailer. You should also remember to optimize your trailer description with relevant links where users can purchase products, find more information, or follow you on other social networks.

How to Create Relevant Backlinks

When you set up your YouTube channel you created a profile and most likely included your links to your business site. This is the first step in using YouTube for relevant backlinks. When you comment on other videos, it will automatically place a link back to your YouTube channel. By creating high quality videos which are informative and engaging to users, you will make it more likely that they will want to visit your site. To create more backlinks, you can embed videos in your website as well as your blog which will send visitors to your YouTube channel. You may also put links in email newsletters and include it on social media updates. On that note, make sure that your YouTube channel is connected with your other social accounts including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

What are subscribers and how do I obtain them?

By far the best way to obtain subscribers on a YouTube channel is creating high quality videos that will make users want more of the same. A subscriber is an individual who has viewed your videos, likes what they see and chooses to subscribe. Once they become a subscriber, every time you upload a new video on your channel, they will receive a notification. This is a unique way to stay connected with your audience. The more subscribers you have, the more popular your channel has become.

There are several strategies for obtaining more subscribers to your YouTube channel. Even though it is video content, it is handled similarly to other forms of content. For instance, you will want to upload videos at least one time per week. This will give you more search results and ultimately more subscribers. Make sure to tag your videos to increase their visibility in search engines. And take time for details like developing a good title and writing meaningful descriptions. You may also link your YouTube to social accounts in order to give it more visibility as well as increasing its share-ability among the online community. The more visitors you have to the channel, the better chances you will have of increased subscribers.

5 Easy Ways to <b>Promote</b> Your <b>Blog</b> Posts in Social Media | Social <b>...</b>

Posted: 05 Feb 2014 09:29 PM PST

ImageYou're a passionate blogger and have churned out great posts. You've published them on your blog and are worried why the posts haven't been driving as much traffic as you would have liked? They need promotion. The Internet is vast and you just cannot sit back and wait for folks to discover your posts. Drive traffic to your blog posts by promoting them handily on social media, using these five simple tips:

#Don't forget to remember smaller social networks

The scope of social media extends way beyond Facebook, Google+, Twitter and LinkedIn. Newer sites away from the spotlight present excellent promotion opportunities since your posts need to compete with lesser posts on these sites.

Sites like Tumblr, Empire Avenue and Quora to name a are a bunch of smaller social networks that have active and focused community members. Morph your blog posts according to the requirements of smaller networks and create visibility on those networks.

 #Unleash your creativity

Attention grabbing posts garner promotions through electronic word of mouth. EWOM makes sure your blog posts stay in the limelight, months and months after you've stopped promoting them yourself.

So how to tap eWOM you ask? Here's how:

1. Use Vine to create micro videos for your post. These micro videos loop every 6 seconds are a great way to provide a short theatrical trailer of sorts for viewers. Later, tweet the video with a backlink to your post, share it on Facebook, Google+ and other sites.

2. Use SlideShare to create an overview of your blog posts and share the slides on other social media sites as well.

#Keep them small silly

Instead of writing huge descriptions to introduce your blog post or copy-pasting whole paragraphs on Facebook, use smaller snippets from the post. Sharing views and statements from the post in the form of short attention grabbing posts works as good on Facebook as it does on Twitter. Of course, as is with any successful SEO strategy, remember to backlink to the full blog post.

#Pin them, bookmark them, Instagram them

This tip ropes in the basic assumption that you abide by the golden rule of including at least one image in all your blog posts. If you didn't already know that, learn it now. A picture is in fact worth a thousand words and your blog post must have one photograph in it at the very least.

Now back to the tip, one easy way to gain more promotion on social media  is to pin the image you use in your blog posts on the Pinterest contributor board. Pinterest continues to be one of the hottest social media sites since late 2012 and pinning the images featured in your posts on the website increases exposure to the content.

Another easy promotion comes from bookmarking the blog posts. Social bookmarking sites like Delicious and StumbleUpon, though not as glorious as they were a few years ago, do continue to have a dedicated fan base.#

#Use your personal brand to promote posts

Elementary, but extremely overlooked, commenting on related posts and forums is one of the easiest ways to promote your posts. Google for related topics and then be a part of the conversation by adding comments and views. One great trick is to include the link to your blog in your signature. Make it a habit to comment/reply on five or six threads on a forum a day.

Apps and websites like Topsy.com, Tehnokrati, Twello and Klout will help you search for keywords and influential people of your industry. Check the activity of important people and groups of your industry and get yourself new visitors by adding high-quality, value-adding comments to popular posts.
